Primary School English language program provides theme-based and communicational curriculum which supports collaborative learning and enriched language use within a holistic approach.
The aim is to integrate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with holistic activities. High Scope learning approaches are integrated to curriculum of grade 1,2 and 3. The program includes interdisciplinary and applied learning activities. It encourages students to use English in order to interact and communicate effectively in various social environments. As global citizens, students develop perspectives to show full participation in necessary skills while interacting and communicating with confidence in English. Besides, they understand the importance of learning another language and culture; develop critical and creative thinking skills throughout the process.
Students in Primary School spend daily 80 minutes with their English teachers. There are small and large group activities, workshops among classroom activities in English lessons. Reading program supports using reading strategies (making deduction from the context and associating graphs to texts etc.) and different types of texts (fiction and non-fiction) to support critical thinking skills (comprehending, judging, defining the ideas etc.). In addition, the program offers opportunities for improving students’ vocabulary competence, reading comprehension skills (guessing the events and the characters, referring, quoting) and content information. Writing program promotes the skills to form students’ expressions, letters, cards, stories, poems and other creative texts. Moreover, it encourages students to think upon linguistic mistakes they make and focus on accurate ones. Students prepare a draft and work on this draft to form accurate, well-done last product.
Speaking program encourages students to systematically improve pronunciation of the students by focusing on sound, stress, rhythm and intonation. And it allows students to communicate with their peers. In addition, it helps students to collect data, analyze the results, solve problems and make presentation. Students develop social skills and trust to be able to speak accurately and fluently with different people.
Listening program helps students to understand stress and tones of sounds. It provides different English language models to let them pay attention to certain details and main ideas while listening. Students are constantly evaluated through process and result oriented evaluations throughout the year.
